TMJ Massage in Windsor, CO
Targeted Jaw, Facial & Intra-Oral Massage for TMJ Tension
Jaw tension rarely feels like “just a tight jaw.”
It can show up as aching around the jaw, facial tension, headaches, neck and shoulder tightness, difficulty relaxing the jaw, or that constant feeling that you’re clenching without even realizing it.
At True Therapeutics in Windsor, Colorado, TMJ massage is focused therapeutic bodywork for the muscles and surrounding tissues involved in jaw tension and movement.
Our approach goes beyond rubbing the outside of the jaw. Depending on your needs, treatment may include the face, jaw, temples, scalp, neck, shoulders and intra-oral massage performed inside the mouth with a gloved hand.
The goal is to address the larger muscular pattern surrounding the jaw, not simply the place that hurts.
What Is TMJ Massage?
The temporomandibular joints, commonly called the TMJ, connect your lower jaw to your skull.
These small joints work alongside multiple muscles to help you talk, chew, yawn and move your jaw.
When the muscles surrounding the jaw become tense, overworked or sensitive, you may notice symptoms around the jaw itself as well as the face, head and neck.
TMJ-focused massage uses targeted manual therapy to work with these muscular and soft-tissue components.
Signs You May Benefit From TMJ-Focused Massage
Clients often seek TMJ massage for:
• Jaw tightness or aching
• Clenching or grinding
• Facial muscle tension
• Tension around the temples
• Headaches associated with jaw or muscular tension
• Neck and shoulder tension occurring alongside jaw symptoms
• Tender jaw muscles
• Tired or overworked chewing muscles
• Difficulty relaxing the jaw
• Muscular tension surrounding the TMJ
TMJ symptoms can have many causes, so massage isn’t appropriate as a replacement for dental or medical evaluation when one is needed.
Instead, we focus on something massage therapists are specifically trained to address: the muscular and soft-tissue component of your symptoms.
Why We Work Beyond the Jaw
The jaw doesn’t function in isolation.
Muscles of the jaw, face, head and neck work together during everyday movement. Clenching and guarding can also occur alongside significant neck and shoulder tension.
That’s why a TMJ session at True Therapeutics may include more than your jaw.
Your therapist may work through areas such as the:
• Jaw and facial muscles
• Temporalis and surrounding temple region
• Scalp
• Muscles surrounding the base of the skull
• Neck
• Upper shoulders
• Chest and other areas when relevant to your individual tension pattern
We follow what we find rather than performing the exact same routine on every client.
Intra-Oral Massage
One of the things that makes our TMJ work more specialized is the option to include intra-oral massage.
With your permission, your therapist puts on a glove and works carefully inside the mouth to access muscles associated with jaw movement and tension that cannot be approached the same way externally.
The work is slow, precise and targeted.
Intra-oral massage may be combined with external work to the jaw, face, temples, neck and shoulders as part of a more comprehensive session.
You are always in control of your treatment. Intra-oral work is performed only with your consent and can be stopped at any time.
What Does Intra-Oral Massage Feel Like?
Some of the muscles we work with can be surprisingly tender, especially in people who clench or carry significant jaw tension.
The goal isn’t to make the work painful.
Your therapist gradually works within your tolerance and communicates with you throughout the treatment. You may feel pressure, tenderness or the sensation of a very specific tight area being contacted.
Because the mouth is a sensitive area, communication and consent are especially important throughout this portion of the session.
TMJ, Headaches & Neck Tension
Jaw tension doesn’t always stay in the jaw.
Some people notice that periods of increased clenching or jaw tension occur alongside headaches, temple tension, tightness at the base of the skull or persistent neck and shoulder discomfort.
Rather than treating these areas as completely separate complaints, we look at the overall muscular pattern.
A TMJ-focused session may therefore include therapeutic massage and myofascial or neuromuscular techniques through the jaw, head, neck and shoulders based on what your therapist finds.
What Happens During a TMJ Massage Session?
Your session begins with a conversation about what you’re experiencing.
We may ask about:
• Where you feel tension or discomfort
• Clenching or grinding
• Headaches
• Neck and shoulder symptoms
• Jaw movement
• Dental appliances or night guards
• Previous dental or TMJ treatment
• Activities or habits that seem to aggravate your symptoms
Your therapist then develops the session around your presentation rather than following a predetermined sequence.
Treatment may include external facial and jaw massage, intra-oral work, therapeutic massage of the neck and shoulders, myofascial techniques, neuromuscular work and gentle movement as appropriate.
Do I Have to Have Intra-Oral Massage?
No.
Intra-oral massage is an option, not a requirement.
We can perform external TMJ-focused massage without working inside the mouth. Your therapist can explain what they recommend and why, and you decide what you’re comfortable with.
Consent matters throughout the entire session.
TMJ Massage & Dental Care
Massage therapy and dental care address different pieces of the TMJ puzzle.
If your symptoms involve your bite, teeth, joint structures, significant clicking or locking, dental problems or another condition requiring diagnosis, a dentist or other qualified healthcare provider should evaluate those concerns.
Massage therapy can complement that care by focusing on the muscular tension and soft tissues surrounding the jaw, face, head and neck.
We believe TMJ care is often strongest when providers stay within their areas of expertise and work collaboratively when appropriate.
How Many TMJ Massage Sessions Will I Need?
There isn’t one answer for everyone.
Some people seek care for a recent increase in muscular tension, while others have been clenching or experiencing recurring symptoms for years.
Your response to treatment, contributing factors and goals all influence how frequently massage may be useful.
After your first session, your therapist can discuss what they noticed and whether additional sessions may be appropriate.
We don’t believe in putting every client on the same treatment schedule.
